WEATHERS GOES TO HOLLYWOOD [Nov 20, 2008]
The producers of the new film, An American Carol, approached Weathers Design to create the movie’s official online campaign headquarters. “Because of the political nature of David Zucker’s new comedy,” says Carolyn Burns, Vice President of Marketing for MPower Pictures, “we wanted an online presence that would promote the movie in the style of a mock political campaign.”
Weathers Design has a strong reputation for delivering effective web solutions in the political arena. “Our success with political campaigns helped our company reach a national level,” says Seth Weathers, CEO and President of Weathers Corporation, who is currently opening a new office in Washington, DC. “But we had no idea it would lead us to Hollywood.”
“Weathers Design was a perfect fit,” Burns says. “They understood the vision and delivered exactly what we needed within a tight deadline.”
The website offers visitors the opportunity to sign-up to “Join the Movement,” watch streaming video of the latest movie trailer, and campaign for the film by sending friends e-cards that play on the film’s slogan, “Laugh like your country depended on it.” The movie opens in theaters everywhere October 3rd, 2008.
An American Carol is a twist on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Re-imagined for a post-9/11 world, the film substitutes a Michael Moore-like filmmaker (Kevin Farley) for Ebenezer Scrooge, the Fourth of July for Christmas, and General George Patton (Kelsey Grammer) for the Ghost of Christmas Past. “In the film, the main character is basically saying ‘Bah, humbug!’ to the Fourth of July,” says David Zucker, writer, director and producer of the film.
Zucker, the mind responsible for such legendary comedies as Airplane!, The Naked Gun series, as well as Scary Movie 2, and Scary Movie 3, turns his sights on anti-Americanism.
“After 9/11, I saw how the Republicans reacted, which was ‘We have to defeat our enemies,’ and how the other side reacted, which was ‘What did we do that was wrong?’ I would’ve felt frustrated just going to the polling booths and voting, so I thought I needed to do more.” In An American Carol, Zucker explores the meaning of being a modern patriot. “I wanted to examine what it meant to be a proud American.”
“Working on this project was our break into the entertainment industry,” says Weathers, who had an opportunity to watch an advance screening of the film. “Although the film is being considered the first openly right-winged comedy and spoofs democrats and liberals,” he says, “it does a damn good job of offending just about everyone.”
